about
Life gets complicated when you're trying to juggle careers, responsibilities and relationships. That's a key takeaway from Madeline Finn's unflinching, Americana-influenced "Asleep in the Driveway," a song whose easygoing tempo masks turbulent lyrics about the disconnect between expectations and reality: "Now, I know I made a promise/Baby, let's be honest/You're still waking up alone." That scenario understandably causes more questions than resolutions ("Is this what you asked me for?/Is that what you wanted?") along with no shortage of self-doubt and intense soul-searching.
"This song came from a phone call with my wife (then fiancée) about being overwhelmed with emotion surrounding budgets and finances while I was on the road touring," Finn says. "This sparked a reflection into the things that make us feel like subpar partners. 'Asleep in the Driveway' is a look into the insidious transactional element that creeps into so many of our relationships."
